( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2016-02-17

The total number of tourists to Guyi Garden in Jiading district of Shanghai exceeded 90,000, an increase of 26.9 percent compared with last year, during the Spring Festival from Feb 7 to 13, local media reported on Feb 16.

Particularly, the day of Feb 10 saw a historic number of 20,000 visitors.

According to the garden officials, the surge in visitors was due to the interesting landscape arrangement and appealing activities conducted in the garden this year.

17 groups of vivid and lovely kid statues were scattered around the garden, which are in different shapes with some catching cicadas, some walking on stilts and some playing firecrackers.

Officials explained that the idea of kid statues came from a famous painting from Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), describing hundreds of kids celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year.

The plum blossom in the garden was in full bloom and its fragrance as well as beautiful flowers attracted a large number of visitors. Together with bamboo, orchid, and chrysanthemum, it gave visitors a taste of the Four Gentlemen.

A traditional parade was also favored by the tourists. Performers disguised as Chinese gods gave excellent performances and interacted with visitors.

Other activities such as riddle guessing, shadow play and paper cutting were also quite popular among tourists.

The officials said that those culture-themed activities were expected to give visitors a taste of traditional Chinese culture. The activities will run until Feb 22.
