Jiading stages youth opera competition

The final of a youth opera competition was recently staged in Jiading district of Shanghai, with the participation of numerous opera lovers of different ages and with various opera tastes, local media reported on July 6.

Contestants, from young kids to university students, were divided into three groups. They all gave brilliant performances of Peking Opera and Kunqu opera, as well as others, truly an audio-visual feast for the audiences.

The performances included excerpts from the famous Jinju Opera Dajinzhi performed by Zhu Liyan, a pupil from Pudong New Area of Shanghai; the Huangmei opera rendered by Chen Yixiang, a pupil from Jiading district of Shanghai; and the Yueju Opera Songhualouhui performed by Zhu Yanjun, a university student from Shanghai International Studies University.

The competition, part of this year's Shanghai Citizens' Cultural Festival, was meant to promote the inheritance and preservation of traditional Chinese opera and enrich public cultural life.
