More than 500 young fencers from East China regions competed in Jiading district, Shanghai, on Dec 15 and 16.

The contestants were from youth fencing clubs and specialist schools in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui and Shandong.

The two-day event was in response to the nationwide fitness program and was expected to promote fencing, which used to be a sport for noblemen in Europe, to more people.

In recent years, Jiading has started promoting fencing in its middle and primary schools.

Jianchen International Fencing Club, founded in 2015, has been the district's major force to promote the sport and train young fencers. It has built partnerships with many local kindergartens, primary schools and middle schools.

This time, over 10 fencers from the district's Zhenchuan Middle School fencing team took prizes home from the competition.

Qian Ruming, head coach of the team, said that the students are enthusiastic about the sport, and coaches from the Jianchen club will teach the skills and knowledge of fencing every week.

Manager of Jianchen club said that they will keep increasing the exposure of fencing in local schools, get more teenagers to learn about the culture of fencing, and discover potential talents via competitions.
