Jiading population grows 24.68% in past decade

The population of Jiading district in East China's Shanghai rose by 24.68 percent from 2010 to 2020, according to the latest national population census.

Official data shows that Jiading has seen the largest population growth across the city during the period, followed by Songjiang district (20.68 percent).

The number of permanent residents in Shanghai increased by more than 1.85 million to exceed 24.87 million over the past decade, said Zhu Min, head of Shanghai's municipal bureau of statistics, citing data from the seventh national census conducted last year.

Pudong New Area has a permanent resident population of more than 5.68 million, the highest in Shanghai and accounting for 22.8 percent of the city's total.

Data shows that the permanent residents in the downtown area has been decreasing. From 2010 to 2020, the population density in the city's downtown area declined from 24,137 to 23,092 people per square kilometer.

In the past 10 years, Shanghai has beefed up efforts to adjust its economic development model and industrial structure, restructure its urban layout, and optimize public service levels to promote the balanced development of urban and rural areas.
