Shanghai Museum of the Chinese Imperial Examination System

( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2013-07-05

The Shanghai Museum of the Chinese Imperial Examination System is located inside the Confucius Temple in Jiading. It is the only museum specializing in the imperial examination system in the world.

The museum is open to the public all year and it provides free entry for senior citizens, military officers, the disabled and students.

The museum is divided into five parts – the "evolution of the imperial examination system", "imperial examination system and Confucianism", "imperial examination system and social civilization", "procedures of the imperial examination system", and "imperial examination system and education". The museum, boasting a large quantity of cultural relics, retells the rise and fall of the imperial examination system over its 1,300-year history, from its initiation in the Sui Dynasty (581-618) to its termination in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

The Chinese Imperial Examination System, or Keju, is the original civil service examination system, which provided a more competitive climate for intellectuals without noble connections to get a civil service job.
