Twin Pagodas of Nanxiang Temple

( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2013-07-12

They were constructed from the Five Dynasty period to the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty (AD 907 - 960) and were originally located inside the gate of Nanxiang Temple.

In the 31st year of the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1766), Nanxiang Temple was destroyed in a fire, and the twin towers made of bricks were the only remnants. They are now Shanghai Municipality Protected Historic Sites.

The ancient pagodas, with seven stories and octahedral sides, are 11 meters high. Completely built with bricks, they are finely crafted in imitation of the wooden-structured towers in South China.

The towers have simple and straight window lattices, finely made bucket arches, delicately made boards and upright pagoda tops. The pagodas are in perfect proportion and are typical of the architectural style of the Tang and Song dynasties. The Twin Pagodas of Nanxiang Temple are the only existing brick pagodas from the Five Dynasty Period in China, and are of high value.
