About 1000 people took part in a sports competition in Shanghai's Jiading district as part of the Shanghai Citizens Sport Meeting on National Fitness Day on August 8, which aimed to increase the public's awareness of issues relating to physical well-being.
The competition included individuals or teams in five categories: students, village committees, companies, government agencies and the disabled. They competed in three events: long rope skipping, short rope-skipping and shuttlecock kicking.
A sports official in the district said that this competition is now a regular part of Jiading's annual celebration of Fitness Day, and that the district would launch more programs such as basketball shooting competitions and eco-friendly exercise initiatives in a bid to promote greater public participation in sports.
