The Autumn Glow Academy of the Jiading district, in the city of Shanghai, recently conducted a course in ancient Chinese civilization at the Confucian Temple in Jiading, and has plans to follow up with additional lessons every Saturday morning.
The first day of the course involved giving each participating child a name, after which, they learned how to do ritual bowing. The instructor, Li Nairu, explained that the study of classical Chinese civilization has to be blended with daily life to deepen the interest in learning and the child’s perception of the meaning of culture. Li then went on to read some classical poems and explain them.
In explaining why the Confucian Temple is a good place for studying classical Chinese civilization, Li said, "It is seen as an important cultural symbol for traditions and, in studying there, children can develop a serious attitude and get a richer feeling for ancient culture.”
Li added that, under district guidelines for Confucian cultural development, the temple will be a center of classical civilization and have influence in the Yangtze River Delta and other Chinese-speaking countries with the help of books, audio and video devices, radio, television, new media and traditional Sinological research.
