Axalta Coating Systems, a leading supplier of liquid and powder coatings, is establishing a new factory in the Jiading Industrial Zone, Jiading district, of the city of Shanghai to produce environmentally friendly liquid coatings.
There was a stone-laying ceremony, on Jan 10 for the factory, which is expected to cost $50 million and go into operation by 2015. It will produce 25,000 tons of coatings annually and, according to Charles Shaver, the Axalta CEO who spoke with the reporter, “[It] will produce coatings suiting our techniques, which are highly efficient, energy-saving, and specially developed for car makers.”
Shaver went on to explain, “The advantages of the simplified techniques -- saving time, energy, and cost for car-makers -- and of the paint -- using fewer organic compounds -- help reduce the impact the auto industry has on the ecology and environment.”
Sun Lianying, the president of the China Coating Industry Association, noted that environmentally friendly liquid coatings are a trend of the future especially since the Chinese government has strict rules for the industry to protect the environment.
Axalta Coating Systems is the new name of DuPont Performance Coatings, which was acquired by the Carlyle Group, on Feb 1, 2013, and has 35 factories around the world, seven research centers, and more than 14,000 employees.
