The 2014 Shanghai Bamboo Culture Festival, which lasted 32 days, ended on October 19 in Guyi garden. A total of 144,000 tourists visited during the event, a 6% increase compared with the previous year.
With the theme of "ecology, gardening and culture", more than 80 kinds of bamboo species were on display, including several rare ornamental bamboos like Indosasa shibataeoides and Phyllostachys heterocycla. Meanwhile, the organizer hosted a variety of art exhibitions, including a Jiading bamboo carving exhibition, a fine bamboo weaving show, a folk musical instrument show and a miniature garden exhibition.
This year’s event aims to let the public feel the charm of bamboo and step closer to nature. The official micro-blog and mobile application of Guyi garden launched new columns – such as "selected bamboos", "eye for bamboo" and "ramble about bamboo” – to help tourists obtain a knowledge of bamboo.
The garden staff also attached verses, ditties, odes and songs according to characteristics of different scenes; while at the same time, some display boards and galleries were also set up to provide the information to visitors.
The "Bamboo Culture Festival" is a potted landscape exhibition, with different bamboo species, which has been running since 1998.
