A public toilet in Nanxiang's Fangjiawan area has been named one of the top 10 conveniences in Shanghai from over 2,000 in a recent review.
The facility on East Minzhu Street near metro Line 11's Nanxiang station is small — less than 80 square meters — and during peak hours there can be long queues.
In order to keep the toilet clean and tidy, Ji Shengqin and her colleagues attend to the toilet nearly 144 times a day.
Supervisor Deng Xiumei visits daily to check to make sure everything is fine — it always is.
Ji and her colleagues were praised not only for their efforts in keeping the toilet spotless but also for their good deeds, including returning mobile phones left behind, helping disabled people and once even saving the life of an elderly person who had suffered a stroke.
To offer better service, Ji even prepared a convenience box in the toilet, with band-aids, medicine, a sewing kit and small stoves for residents to use free of charge.
Sanitation company manager Chen Guo said: "Our public toilet is not luxurious. We rely on management and hard work, so our experience is easy to copy at other public toilets."
