Illegal buildings were also demolished to make space for more green lands. In the tunnel at the cross point of G1501 Shanghai Ring Expressway and the Shanghai-Yixing highroad, there used to be more than 100 illegal sheds running small businesses, processing metals and stones. Last September, authorities demolished the region's illegal buildings with a total floor space of 20,000 sq m to make way for the green lands.

More than 30 varieties of trees have now been planted and the former shanty area is expected to transform into a green belt of about 17,500 sq m.

From 2011 to 2014, about 233 hectares of green space was created surrounding industrial plants and 182-hectare green area was created in residential communities. Meanwhile, in some old communities, residents were encouraged to eliminate random bushes and grow trees and flowers instead.

Vertical planting is another important way to improve environment in Jiading as it could adjust temperature, reduce noise and make the air clean. By the end of 2014, the total vertical planting area in Jiading has reached 124,700 sq m. The rooftop of Shanghai Poly Theater, for instance, was planted with shrubs and ground covers, reminiscent of a tiny garden.

Green roofs help cool down the temperature of a building and can reduce 70 percent of the energy consumption by air conditioners in summer. Major high-rises under construction in Jiading all included green roofs in their design, according to Chen Wei, secretary of Party branch in Jiading forestry administrative bureau.
