Library map released in Jiading

Jiading library released a map showing all public reading space in the district on May 10, in a bid to help book-lovers to read whenever they want.

The map marks the locations of district library, libraries in 12 towns, reading rooms in villages and 24-hour automatic book lending machines across the district.

So far, Jiading has established a network of public libraries where readers can conveniently search, lend, return and renew books in communities, transportation hubs and even shopping centers as long as they have a reader’s card in the district library.

To spread reading among rural area, Jiading has built 107 small-scale libraries and 121 reading rooms in villages. Another 100 People’s Book Houses were established to enable senior citizens, factory workers and rural youth to access books.

According to the 12th National Reading Survey of the Chinese Academy of Press and Publication, digital reading is gradually overtaking traditional reading in China.

According to the survey, in the past year, the average Chinese person read 7.78 books a year, including 4.56 printed books and 3.22 electric books, and 58.1 percent of people read on computers, cellphones or tablets, exceeding the number of people who read printed books by 0.1 percent for the first time.

The survey also showed that more than 68 percent of people want to read more and the demand for more reading events from rural residents is even higher, at 72.3 percent.
