Around 300 educational experts brainstormed on the applications of STEAM education in the country's schools at a forum on STEAM education in primary and secondary schools nationwide recently held at the Jiading Industrial Zone of Shanghai, on Nov 4, local media reported.

STEAM refers to the fields of study in the categories of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The STEAM programs aim to teach students to think critically and have an engineering or designing approach towards real-world problems while building on their math and science bases.

Ren Youqun, vice-principal of the East China Normal University attended the forum and delivered an enlightening speech on the differences and similarities between STEAM and Maker education.

Experts exchanged ideas on topics such as innovation, design and application of STEAM courses and current achievements in STEAM education.

Authorities claimed that the Jiading Industrial Zone has been focusing on the integration of scientific and cultural education in recent years and wanted to promote local students' creativity and critical thinking through the application of STEAM programs.
