An exhibition of Pingyang woodprint pictures from Shanxi province in northern China has opened at Tanyuan Garden in Nanxiang town, Jiading district, Shanghai, local media reported on Feb 4.

The exhibition runs until March 31 and has 80 pictures on display, telling ancient stories, delivering auspicious messages and welcoming the upcoming Spring Festival.

With a history of more than a thousand years, Pingyang woodprint pictures date back to the Sui Dynasty (A.D. 581-618) and are a symbol of traditional Chinese culture. The art form was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.

As China rapidly develops, displaying these woodprint pictures during Spring Festival is a tradition almost forgotten nowadays, said a local official. However, through such exhibitions, visitors are expected to learn more about traditional customs and artistry.

The organizers said they also want to draw local residents' attention to the country's intangible cultural heritages and enrich their cultural life during the Spring Festival.
