( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2016-03-07

Authorities of Jiading district, Shanghai announced that the district has got approval from the city's development and reform commission on Feb 22 to build a new social welfare institute for senior citizens in its Juyuan New Area, local media reported on March 3.

The project is now in the planning stage and is expected to start construction at the end of this year, said the authorities.

According to its plan, the new institute will have a total investment of nearly 170 million yuan ($26 million) and will cover a combined floor area of about 18,000 square meters.

The welfare institute will consist of five buildings and other supporting facilities such as a parking lot. It is designed to have a bed capacity of 622.

And to create a better living environment for the seniors, the institute also focuses on the greening work, where the greening rate is expected to reach 41.7 percent.

Officials also explained that the project is intended to help alleviate problems arising from Jiading's aging population. Statistics show that the district's residents aged 60 and above have exceeded 180,000 at the end of 2015. Experts also predict that by 2020, its population over that age will exceed 200,000.
