Cucurbit exhibition

A cucurbit exhibition will be held at the Guyi Garden in Jiading district, Shanghai, from Jan 1. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

Due to its Chinese pronunciation which sounds like "Fulu" (a word which bestows blessing and honor), the cucurbit has long been regarded as a symbol of happiness and good fortune. Since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), Chinese people have tried to use cultivation techniques to change the color and shape of cucurbits, developing many varieties in the process. A cucurbit exhibition will be held in hope of bringing good luck to visitors in the New Year.
