Jiading temples send special congee at Laba Festival

( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2017-01-10

Laba congee is a traditional dish that Chinese households cook and eat during the Laba Festival, which falls on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month every year and is one of the most important festivals on the Chinese calendar marking the day of Buddha's enlightenment.

Laba congee usually consists of at least eight ingredients such as glutinous rice, lotus seeds, red dates, red beans and peanuts, representing people's prayers for harvest, happiness and peace.

This year, the Laba Festival falls on Jan 5 and temples in Jiading district of Shanghai sent Laba congee to local residents and welfare institutes to celebrate the festival.
