Nanyuan Calligraphy and Painting Association in Shanghai's Jiading Industrial Zone hosted a cultural event on Feb 9. The event was held to celebrate its 17th anniversary as well as the Lantern Festival that fell on Feb 11 this year.

Members showed off a wide variety of performance skills with Chen Zhaoxun writing a three meter-long couplet and Wang Xueshan creating a painting containing an auspicious message.

The attendees also worked together to create two 10 meter-long scrolls with various styles of writings and paintings on it.

Since riddle guessing is a traditional celebration activity practiced during the Lantern Festival, some riddles were written down and hung on the walls to create a festive atmosphere.

Additionally, members took the chance to sit down and discuss the future developments of the association. The association aims to become well-known throughout the Jiading Industrial Zone and further its importance in terms of preserving and passing on traditional Chinese culture.

The Lantern Festival falls every year on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The festival is held to mark the first full moon of the new lunar year and is celebrated by Chinese people through hanging colorful lanterns, playing games, and gathering with friends to eat glutinous rice balls known as yuanxiao.
