The education bureau of Shanghai's Jiading district struck a deal with the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra on April 1 to promote traditional Chinese music among local children.

The Ying Yuan Education Group and five kindergartens have been selected as pilot bases for the cultural project of improving students' knowledge of Chinese folk music.

Luo Xiaoci, director of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, said that the project, spanning three years, is set to start in May. More than 10 top players of traditional Chinese instruments such as guzheng (Chinese zither) will be assembled into a team of teachers to bring students closer to traditional Chinese music.

Folk music orchestras will also be established in pilot schools to popularize knowledge of traditional Chinese music and teach students basic playing skills.

Luo said that they expect to get more people to know and love traditional Chinese music.

According to local officials, this move is intended to strengthen the students' music education and arouse their love of traditional Chinese culture.

The Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, founded in 1952, was the first big-scale modern Chinese orchestra in China. It is famous for its mastering of all kinds of works. The orchestra continues to play an important role in the development of Chinese music.
