A 7-storey smart parking lot will begin trial operations in Nanxiang Shineland Industrial Park, located in Shanghai's Jiading district, at the end of July.

The innovative and specially designed facility aims to improve spatial efficiency and increase the number of parking spaces in an area of Jiading with notorious and well-documented congestion issues.

The garage will have a maximum capacity of 75 vehicles and can hold 60 cars and 15 SUVs.

Unlike traditional drive-in parking garages, this facility is operated electronically by special elevators that automatically deliver cars to allocated spots. Drivers simply have to drive their car to the lobby of the garage and let technology do the rest of the work.

When picking up the car, drivers can pay the charge via mobile phone and the car will be delivered to the lobby allowing drivers to continue on their way. The whole procedure can be completed within two minutes.

The garage has been designed and built by Bucoo, a Jiading-based startup that aims to be a smart traffic solution provider. Currently, the company is working on the design of smart parking lots in 13 areas around downtown Shanghai areas including Shanghai Television Station and Zhoujiazui Road.

The company also plans to add leisure functions to its smart garages in hope of giving drivers a better parking experience. It sets up a goal of building 10,000 smart parking facilities in the next three years, said Yan Yeqing, chairman of Bucoo.
