The opera performance was the latest event in the traditional culture festival being held by the garden in Shanghai's Jiading district, which started on Sept 22 and is themed on "discovering intangible cultural heritage, experiencing traditional culture".

A splendid array of exhibits is also on show in the garden. Zhi paintings created by Lian Shantang can be seen at Yuanyang Hall, as well as wheat-straw paintings by Yu Longgen at Yiye Tang.

In addition, Meihua Hall has exhibitions of clothes, stage props and ornaments from Peking Opera troupes collected by Lin Jincheng, while the Shiyun Room is displaying blue calicoes collected by Nantong Blue Calico Museum.

There is still more to see during the National Day holiday. One of Guyi Garden's greatest treasures — a hexagonal blue and white porcelain tea caddy printed with figures and flowers—will be on display in the Xixiang Room of Meihua Hall.

Ren Zheng's calligraphy will also be on show at Huashen Palace, and visitors will also be able to enjoy a range of folk art performances, musical recitals and plays demonstrating traditional Han culture.

Guyi Garden will also hold "back-to-the-ancients" parties in which visitors will be encouraged to dress in traditional Chinese clothes. Visitors dressed in Han-style robes, cheongsams or long gowns will be able to enter the garden for free.
