Shanghai citizens were treated to a day of garden tours guided by landscape architect Zhang Yonglai on Nov 25 in Jiading, Shanghai.
Organized by the Shanghai Society of Landscape Architecture, Jiading Landscaping Management Bureau and Jiading Museum, the activity is aimed at encouraging more people to visit and appreciate traditional Chinese culture in Chinese gardens, according to the local media Jiadingbao.
Zhang, former vice chief engineer of Shanghai Landscape Architecture Design Research Institute, delivered his keynote address at the Jiading Museum.
He introduced the features of Qiuxiapu Garden, its history, renovation of its four scenic spots as well as the technique used in designing the garden. Later, he guided visitors on a tour around the garden and explained in detail the exquisite designs in every corner. Fascinated by the precipitous mountains, deep winding porches and grand temples, visitors took many photos and asked for more information.
Zhang studies classical landscape architecture and has designed and refurbished many parks in Shanghai, including the Qiuxiapu Garden, Guyiyuan Garden, Shanghai Grand View Garden, Wanshousi Temple and Guilin Garden.
Qiuxiapu Garden is one of the five existing classical gardens in Shanghai. It is small in size but rich in heritage, with a delicate layout that integrates architecture and flora together.
