Nearly 600 cyclists from home and abroad flocked to Waigang town, Jiading district of Shanghai, on March 3, which was selected as the first stop of the 2018 Skoda Heros Shanghai Road Cycling Series.
Participants were divided into six groups: elite, women's, under 25s (U25), under 35s (U35), masters', and men's.
Elite group riders had to ride a distance of 38.4 kilometers, 6.4 kilometers farther than contestants of the U25, U35, masters' and men's groups. Women's group riders were required to ride a distance of 25.6 kilometers.
After day-long fierce competition, the winners of each group crossed the line to collect their prizes ranging from 100 yuan ($14.5) to 3,000 yuan. The fastest rider in each group was honored with a winners' jersey made especially for the event.
Additionally, a cycling carnival was held alongside the competition, allowing amateurs to experience the joy of cycling. A balance-bike training base for kids was also inaugurated.
The event, held in Waigang for several consecutive years, is expected to promote cycling and healthy low-carbon lifestyles.
