An intelligent sanitation system run by Yingxin Sanitary Service Company recently began operating in Xincheng sub-district, Jiading district, Shanghai.
The system provides residential communities with a clear garbage classification schematic which can be accessed by clicking the management button on its monitoring system.
The system has been in use since March and the proportion of household food waste to be correctly classified has increased to over 63 percent.
The number and weight of trash cans will be displayed on the monitor of the garbage truck. All the information will also be sent to the company's system simultaneously.
"Eight cans of household food waste, weighing 439 kg; 15 cans of residual waste, weighing 231 kg", the garbage statistics of Jiaxianzhuang residential community appear on the monitor and a report is formed.
Taking Jiaxianzhuang as an example, the percent of household food waste which was correctly classified reached 65.52 percent on May 16, 6.77 percent higher than the previous day, ranking fourth among the covered communities.
Such statistics could provide scientific evidence for better resource allocation, and a basis upon which to adjust methods of garbage collection, said Huang Xiaohong, head of the Party branch of Jiale community.
It could also urge each residential area to correctly sort their garbage by comparing the statistics with other residential areas, Huang added.

The HD camera on the garbage truck records the garbage types and can recognize immediately whether it is sorted correctly or mixed together.
The GPS locating system helps to check the transporting routes. While the collection is finished, different colors of lights will appear on the map in corresponding communities. Green represents that the collection is completed, and red unfinished.
The intelligent sanitation system is already installed in five residential blocks in Shanghai – Jiaxianzhuang, Jiale Garden, Elysee Garden, Xincheng Bafang and Baiheli residential communities.
Xincheng sub-district plans to incorporate all 45 residential communities into the system.
In addition, an intelligent "door-to-door" service for large pieces of garbage will soon be put into use in the neighborhood.
