Palm-leaf knitting works create a stuffed animal world

( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2019-08-22

Jiangqiao town in Shanghai's Jiading district recently held a summer vacation activity related to palm-leaf knitting that proved entertaining to the young participants, local media reported.

Xu Guangmin, a local resident in Jiaxi community in Jiading district, instructed the children on how to knit all kinds of animals such as spiders, tortoises and dinosaurs, which gained all the children's attention.

"I want to learn how to knit a grasshopper," said one child.

"The palm-leaf dinosaur looks so real," said another.

Xu contributed his palm-leaf knitting achievements to his daughter who was fascinated with a street artist's performance she and her father had once come across. The magic skills of the knitting works aroused their curiosity.

"It can be dated back to October, 2017, when I stayed up late to learn the knitting skills by an online course with help from other knitting artists," said the self-taught Xu.

After a period of hard work, Xu had mastered the basic knitting skills, and found it easy to finish a grasshopper, a snake and a tortoise. Then his daughter joined him, which gave them sweet family memories.

His daughter' s elementary school invited Xu to give a knitting class for the students, and the course has become part of its characteristic curriculum.
