Shoushan stone, which is mined in Shoushan village in Fujian province, is long-renowned for its bright colors and beautiful texture. Carved objects using the stone can be traced back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

The craft, known as Shoushan stone carving, has since been passed down to generations of artisans in Fujian.

An exhibition featuring Shoushan stone carvings created by Chen Lizhong, a national inheritor of the carving technique who is based in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian province, is underway at the Han Tianheng Art Museum in Jiading district of Shanghai.

Chen's works using other kinds of stones, as well as stone sculptures by his students, are also on display.

Lasting until Oct 10, the exhibition displays more than 130 pieces of exquisite stone carvings, offering a wonderful opportunity for local residents to get a glimpse of the art form.

Chen is a Chinese arts and crafts master. Born in 1968, he has devoted himself to Shoushan stone carving for years and enjoys a strong reputation in the field.
