The annual Shanghai Confucius Cultural Festival kicked off on Sept 22 in Jiading district, with a series of dazzling performances taking place.
According to the organizing committee, the event will last until Sept 25, during which 14 themed activities will be staged to entertain local residents, as well as promote traditional culture.
A memorial ceremony for Confucius was held at the Confucius Temple in Jiading on Sept 21 to mark the 2,570th birthday of Confucius, the great ancient Chinese educator and philosopher, which falls on Sept 28.
Traditional cultural ceremonies such as the "first writing ceremony", a traditional Chinese ritual for children learning to read, the traditional coming-of-age ceremony, and Chinese style weddings will be performed as well.
In addition, a calligraphy activity that involves 300 residents writing Confucian classics, a poetry recital party, and an exhibition of cultural relics on the 60th anniversary of Jiading Museum will also be launched.
