( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2020-02-26

The Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences started as the Engineering Research Institute of the State Central Research Academy, founded in 1928. In 1953, the institute changed its name to the Metallurgy and Ceramics Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; in 1959, it became the Ceramic Chemistry and Engineering Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences before finally adopting its current name in 1984.

Over 90 years of development has helped the institute become a comprehensive research institute for inorganic nonmetal materials. It has achieved outstanding results in pioneering basic research and high-technology innovations and applications.

The institute has 750 members, including 632 researchers, one academician from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and two academicians from the Chinese Academy of Engineering (as of 2018).

Its research covers advanced inorganic material science and engineering, including high-performance structural ceramics, functional ceramics, crystalline ceramics, ceramic matrix composites, artificial crystals, inorganic coatings, energy materials, biomaterials, ancient Chinese ceramics, and the analysis and characterization of advanced inorganic materials.

The organization has received over 1,100 science and technology awards, including 417 at the provincial, ministerial or higher levels, 30 State-level invention awards, nine national natural science awards, and 15 national science development awards. Among the 3,352 patents the institute has applied for, 1,774 of them have been officially authorized (as of 2018).

The institute has advanced research facilities and occupies three branches in Shanghai's Changning and Jiading districts, as well as the city of Taicang in neighboring Jiangsu province.

It also enjoys an advanced book, journal and information system to support its efficient and dynamic research. The institute's Inorganic Material Journal is among China's core academic journals and has been included in the Science Citation Index Expanded.

The institute has been carrying out academic exchange and cooperative research with famous universities and research organizations in the United States, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Russia. It also cooperates with world-renowned companies and international organizations, such as the Western European Nuclear Research Center, in the field of academic project industrialization and technology export.

The institute is authorized to grant master's and doctoral degrees. It also has a post-doctoral program. The organization has co-educated graduates with many countries and regions in the world, including the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Hong Kong.
