Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2020-02-28

The Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics (SINAP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), which was established in August 1959 as a State-run institute and named the Shanghai Institute of Nuclear Research before June 2003, conducts comprehensive research in the civil use of nuclear technologies.

Aiming to become a world-class photon science center and a multidisciplinary nuclear research base in 15 years, the institute has been focusing on photon and nuclear sciences and promoting the industrial application of research results.

It has two campuses, which occupy 47 hectares and are located in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park and Jiading district, a satellite township of Shanghai which is excellent in scientific and technological development.

The institute has undertaken the task of building the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility, one of the biggest scientific projects in China. It also has a key CAS laboratory for nuclear analysis and a key Shanghai lab for superconductive radio-frequency cavity techniques.

In 2017, the institute had 1,093 employees, including 811 scientists and engineers, two academicians and 139 professors or equivalents. In addition, 196 postgraduate and 264 doctoral students are reading at the institute, majoring in such fields as physics, nuclear science and technology, inorganic chemistry, high polymer chemistry, particle physics, biophysics, optics, signal and information processing, and electromagnetic field and microwave technology.

Scientists at the institute have made over 600 achievements, 170 of which have won awards from the nation, CAS or Shanghai, including first prize in the national science and technology progress award in 2013. Typical examples include the 1.4-meter cyclotron on which Pt-202 was synthesized, a breakthrough in China in new nuclide synthesis and identification; the first mini-cyclotron mass spectroscopy in the world; and a 67Ga-labeled citrate, which is the first radiopharmaceutical in Chinese pharmacopeias.

The institute has always attached importance to academic exchanges and cooperation with the international community. It has established collaborations with major research global institutions in synchrotron science (photon science), covering over 60 countries and regions such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Russia, the United States, Australia, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, and Brazil.

There is also a list of academic journals sponsored and edited by the institute, such as Nuclear Techniques (in Chinese), Nuclear Science and Techniques (in English), and Radiation Research and Radiation Processing (in Chinese).
