The Shanghai Acoustics Laboratory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) held some live streaming broadcast activities to celebrate Public Science Day, which fell on May 23.

Wang Chen, a researcher at the lab, worked as an online anchor in an effort to popularize science and offered viewers a lively online class on acoustics.

Through the use of advanced technology, viewers can better understand the operating principles of ultrasonic waves applied in the construction of some large construction projects such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Hangzhou Bay Bridge.

"The COVID-19 epidemic has helped promote the development of livestream broadcasts of our lab, and the online virtual tour has made it more convenient for science fans to explore the lab," said a worker at the lab.

The Shanghai Acoustics Laboratory of the CAS was founded in 1960, making this year its 60th anniversary. The lab initially focused on marine acoustic experiments, and after decades of development, it now leads Chinese research institutions in terms of research and innovation capabilities.

Over the past 60 years, the lab has made great contributions to the country's scientific and technological development. It is now mainly engaged in the research and development of technology for acoustic navigation, underwater acoustic positioning and detection, ultrasonic applications, digital communication, information processing, and medical acoustics.
