Jiading district, Shanghai launched a "cloud tour" campaign from June 13 to 27 to celebrate the annual Cultural and Natural Heritage Day, which fell on June 13 this year.
The cloud tour, hosted by the district's culture and tourism bureau, showed viewers more than 10 of Jiading's intangible cultural heritage items and some local tourist attractions.
Yu Lingyan, a live streamer on the tour, said that with the help of fashion-conscious young consumers, traditional intangible cultural heritage items are becoming more popular among the younger generation.
In addition, two new recipes for the Nanxiang xiaolongbao, a type of steamed bun originating during the reign of Emperor Tongzhi of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), have recently become popular in Shanghai. The recipes include cocoa mushroom buns and banana buns, according to Yu.
"Many people may think of intangible cultural heritage items as very traditional and old-fashioned," said one Jiading government official.
She said that the online activity is meant to make young people more interested in intangible cultural heritage items by making them seem more modern and fashionable.
People can observe the activity by following the official WeChat account of Culture Jiading (WenhuaJD). An array of lively activities featuring traditional Chinese medicine and Jiangnan food will be arranged during the activity.
