China's first 5G-based smart transportation experience center was opened to the public on March 1, offering visitors a chance to experience self-driving tours.
The center, launched by China's largest carmaker SAIC Motor, Shanghai International Auto City, China Mobile, and Huawei Technologies, is situated at Future Mobility Park in Shanghai International Auto City, Anting town.
A woman surnamed Xie was one of the first people who tested the advanced technologies. The driving distance was three kilometers and took about 15 minutes, with the center console of the car automatically displaying the status of the traffic lights and sending real-time data of traffic conditions.
"It was a wonderful trip, and I felt so calm and safe in the car," said Xie.
5G-powered self-driving services offer drivers more time to respond and act when driving, as well as provide an efficient driving experience, according to Hong Ji, an official of the smart transportation experience center.
Local authorities said that more 5G-enbabled tours will be launched in the future, with people who want to experience the advanced technologies able to make reservations through the official APP "上汽R".
