​Volvo Cars Shanghai Design Center in Jiading put into operation

The Volvo Cars Shanghai Design Center in Shanghai's Jiading district was recently opened.

Together with the company's design centers in Gothenburg, Sweden and Camarillo, the United States, the Shanghai center will form a strong design system to further expand Volvo Cars' global design footprint.

The 5,500-square-meter Volvo Cars Shanghai Design Center can accommodate more than 100 designers and creative engineers, and its studios are equipped with milling machines, 3D printers and other equipment for efficient preparation of high-precision models. Designers can also use VR technology to design and create.

"The Volvo Cars Shanghai Design Center aims to become one of the global automotive brand design centers with the strongest comprehensive capability in Asia," said Jeremy Offer, head of Global Design at Volvo Cars. "The new office environment and cutting-edge technology at the Shanghai center will promote the design level of Volvo Cars."

The Shanghai design team was established in 2010 and comprises of professionals from all kinds of backgrounds. The Volvo EX90 Excellence is one of the first design projects led by the Shanghai design team.

In April this year, the Volvo EX90 Excellence made its China debut. The car is a four-seater version of the new all-electric flagship Volvo EX90 and the most luxurious model by the automaker.

"The successful construction of the Volvo EX90 Excellence shows that the capabilities of our design team in Shanghai are rapidly improving," said Li Jingyao, vice-president of Design for Volvo Cars Asia Pacific.

In April this year, Volvo Cars sold 12,485 vehicles in the Chinese mainland, a year-on-year increase of 46.3 percent and a month-on-month increase of 8.1 percent. Fifty percent of Volvo Cars' annual sales is expected to come from pure electric vehicles by 2025.
