The drive-in at Shanghai Auto Expo Park has seen a recent surge in visitors as temperatures have eased, offering a fresh way to cool off and relax on summer evenings.
A local resident surnamed Li brought friends to experience the setup. He believes car cinemas promote car culture and offer a friendlier, more casual viewing experience compared to traditional theaters.
"I can watch in my car or hop in a friend's. It's private and free — I can lie down, snack, take calls, and chat about the movie without disturbing others," Li said.
Some viewers set up tables outdoors, enjoying beer, snacks, and good company while watching the film, adding to the fun.
Founder Wang Ji explained that the drive-in features a 200-square-meter screen, with audio available via a specific radio frequency. The venue can host up to 80 cars, screening movies in sync with regular theaters.
"With cooler weather, we've seen more visitors. We average 28 cars and about 80 viewers daily, with more on weekends," Wang said.
Tickets are sold per car, allowing all occupants to watch three movies in one night. The cinema also offers various events and discounts during festivals.
