On Aug 8, the eighth Ruijin Proton Therapy Forum announced a significant milestone: the Ruijin Hospital Cancer Proton Center has treated 227 patients with its first domestically produced proton therapy system.
This system has expanded its treatment scope to include cervical cancer, anal canal cancer, recurrent rectal cancer, gastric cancer, and small intestine lymphoma, showing promising short-term results.
Last year, a 9-year-old patient was diagnosed with malignant nasal tumors. After two unsuccessful surgeries, her parents opted for proton therapy at Ruijin, making her the ninth child treated with the new system. She has undergone 19 treatments with minimal side effects and plans to complete 28 sessions, aiming to return to school in September.
Chen Jiayi, director of Radiation Therapy at Ruijin, highlighted the benefits of proton therapy for children, noting fewer side effects compared to other radiation treatments. The center has treated eight pediatric and adolescent tumor cases, with significant improvements observed within three months post-treatment.
The domestically produced proton therapy system, developed by Ruijin Hospital and several Chinese research institutes, matches international standards.
Ning Guang, president of Ruijin Hospital, emphasized the center's decade-long efforts, treating over 200 patients and aiming for further advancements in tumor radiation therapy.
