From Oct 11 to 16, the Shanghai Art & Design Academy hosted the "2024 Sino-Thai International Workshop on Urban Renewal". The event brought together students and teachers from China and Thailand to explore bamboo as a medium for urban transformation.
Over 50 students, guided by instructors from both countries, crafted various bamboo artworks. Creations ranged from spherical lamps to elegantly curved pieces, showcasing the versatility of bamboo.
"We drew inspiration from Baiyu grass, which has a similar resilience to bamboo," explained Xiao Xintong, a student. "While keeping the original shape, we innovated by altering petal sizes and directions."
The workshop offered an immersive learning experience. "I learned weaving techniques from Thai teachers and combined them with Chinese bamboo culture to enrich my crafts," Xiao added.
Another student, Luo Yuanyuan, crafted a snail-shaped sculpture using a Möbius strip design. "We aimed to evoke thoughts on existence and eternity," Luo said, noting the practical guidance from Thai artists.
Despite language barriers, art served as a universal bridge. "The students have a solid foundation in urban planning and approach practice with diligence," said Dr Mathasit Addok from Bangkok Thonburi University. "This workshop enables them to use bamboo to contribute to urban renewal."
Li Gang, dean of the School of Urban Design, emphasized bamboo as a common material in both countries. "We plan to explore other materials like wood and metal to enhance urban spaces," he stated.
The workshop also marked a deeper collaboration between the two institutions, aiming to provide students with broader perspectives on urban renewal.
