Continental Automotive Systems (Shanghai) Co Ltd, a branch of Continental AG, has reached a significant milestone by producing its 100 millionth electronic control unit (ECU) at its Shanghai factory. ECUs, vital for controlling engine functions, are considered the "intelligent brain" of vehicles.
General Manager Ralf Luchs noted, "This milestone reflects our team's dedication and the market's recognition of our quality. Our Shanghai factory is a key ECU production base, and we aim for even greater success."
Established in 2001, Continental Shanghai initially faced challenges due to limited experience in automotive electronics. A dedicated team helped streamline ECU production, which evolved from basic anti-lock braking systems (ABS) to advanced electronic stability control (ESC) systems, extending their use to motorcycles. The factory pioneered fully automated production lines, enhancing efficiency to meet international standards.
With the automotive industry's shift towards electrification, the factory advanced its ECU offerings from the MK C1 to the more compact and versatile MK C2 series, optimizing performance in fuel-saving and range-extending modes.
In 2017, the factory integrated over 40 collaborative robots into production, boosting efficiency and handling repetitive tasks. Digital tools now connect and analyze data across operations, transforming them into smart processes. Its automated logistics warehouse can operate without human presence.
The factory is enhancing its smart manufacturing capabilities and ensuring precision with robotic arms and high-speed shuttle cars. Technologies like big data, AI, and 3D printing are also being implemented, with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) facilitating unmanned product transport.
Jiading Industrial Zone, where the company is located, continues to strengthen its automotive sector, hosting both established and emerging companies. The zone aims to expand its automotive parts supply chain and seize new opportunities.
