Purem Automotive Technology (Shanghai), a German-based company founded 160 years ago, has recently been recognized as a foreign-funded global research and development (R&D) center by Shanghai authorities.
Situated in Jiading Industrial Zone, Jiading district, Purem aims to leverage its expertise in emission control and thermal management systems to foster innovation for both Chinese and global markets, supporting the modernization of Jiading's automotive industry.
Its Shanghai R&D Center features specialized labs for component, engine, and full vehicle acoustic testing, equipped with advanced facilities. It focuses on new energy batteries, hydrogen technology, and natural gas applications, offering cutting-edge solutions for the automotive sector.
"Being recognized as a global R&D center is an acknowledgment of our technical strength and brings significant responsibility," said Xie Lei, vice-president of R&D for Asia Pacific at Eberspächer Group's Purem Division. The center will integrate resources from China and the Asia-Pacific region, focusing on emission systems, automotive electronics, thermal management, and new energy technologies.
Since its establishment in Jiading in 2011, Purem has expanded its production bases across China and into Southeast and South Asia. In response to China's emission regulation upgrades, the Shanghai center evolved into a global R&D hub by 2023.
With the upcoming 2025 fuel consumption standards, Purem developed a new emission system, reducing back pressure by 20 percent and enhancing heat exchange efficiency, meeting international standards. These innovations are already being applied in markets like Japan and Europe.
Purem is collaborating with Chinese carmakers to support their international expansion, benefiting from Jiading's robust automotive ecosystem and supportive policies. As of May 2025, Jiading hosts 73 multinational headquarters and R&D centers, with significant foreign investment.
