The "Encounter with Grass Weaving" exhibition opened its doors on June 13 in Jiading district, Shanghai, showcasing over 70 exquisite grass weaving pieces from Asia, Africa, and the Americas, as well as Xuhang grass weaving, a local intangible cultural heritage item.

This exhibition, which runs until Aug 31, offers visitors a rare opportunity to explore the intricate art of grass weaving as a medium of cross-continental dialogue.

According to Lu Yanping, the curator, although grass weaving is a universal art form, each culture's use of materials and techniques is distinct and intriguing. By bringing together these diverse works, the organizers hope to provide the public with a deeper understanding of intangible cultural heritage and the art of grass weaving and an appreciation for Xuhang's own contributions to the craft.

The exhibition is divided into six distinct sections, featuring more than 20 masterpieces of Xuhang traditional grass weaving alongside international contributions from countries such as Japan, Thailand, Bali, Colombia, and Zambia.

Japan's rush grass weavings embody the serene aesthetics of Kyoto, while Thailand's vibrant palm leaf baskets tell tales of elephants and the Chao Phraya River. Zambia's robust storage baskets, crafted from coarse grass ropes, capture the essence of African savannah life.

"The colors of the international pieces are more vibrant, especially the floral woven handbags from Bali. In contrast, Xuhang's weavings have a more rustic charm," said Mao Jingwei, a local resident.

The exhibition has also attracted a number of professional grass weavers. Xin Meidi, who has been practicing Xuhang grass weaving since she was a child, expressed her fascination with the foreign exhibits.

She said that she appreciated the opportunity to learn new techniques and understand the emotions of the artisans who crafted them. "I would love to meet these artisans in person one day," she said.
