Shanghai lies along the Southeast Asia Pacific Flyway — making it a key route for birds migrating south for the winter.
Kai Pflug, a German resident of Shanghai's Jiading district, has spent more than a decade photographing local birds and he's self-published the Shanghai Nanhui Bird Atlas, featuring around 180 species that he observed during over 550 trips.
Pflug began with a simple camera and gradually upgraded to professional lenses and a car to follow the birds. He recommends seasonal birdwatching spots: Chongming Dongtan Wetland in winter, Tianmashan Hill for forest birds and Nanhui coastal areas during migration, when rare species pass through for a few days.
Committed to sharing his work, Pflug runs two websites, including www.10000birds.com, a collaborative blog with 20 international contributors.
He hopes raising awareness of bird life will promote their conservation. Beyond photography, he reports illegal trapping and is an advocate of habitat diversity — ensuring Shanghai remains a welcoming home for migratory birds.
