Timothy Fok, chairman of the World Xiangqi Federation and a well-known Hong Kong entrepreneur, described xiangqi as both a sport and a cultural treasure, encouraging young players to uphold and carry on its traditions.

China Xiangqi Association President He Fengxiang noted that the championship is returning to Shanghai after 26 years and to China after 12, promising efficient organization and a vibrant event blending tradition with modern appeal.

On the afternoon of Sept 21, a lively xiangqi market at Yuanxiang Lake Park in Jiading district brought the game into the local community. Fok visited stalls showcasing Suzhou embroidery and gourd pyrography, tried Loutang flat pancakes, and praised the event for connecting xiangqi with China's intangible cultural heritage, while also engaging youth.
