Editor's Note: This video series follows Xiaoru, a middle school student from Shanghai's Jiading district, as she explores the Jiading Confucian Temple. Through constructive dialogues with historical figures, Xiaoru explores the core tenets of Confucian values. The series highlights Jiading's rich Confucian heritage and the enduring positive role of Confucianism in shaping the soul and character of young people and the wider Chinese community.
In the fourth episode, Xiaoru meets Lou Jian, a native of Jiading district, who studied under Gui Youguang in his early years. Lou was a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) writer and calligrapher and one of the esteemed Four Masters of Jiading. Along with his student, renowned patriot Huang Chunyao, they impart an insightful lesson on benevolence.
