Early summer brings a stunning hydrangea feast to Shanghai's ancient Guyi Garden, a classic Jiangnan scenic spot.
Blooming vigorously along lakesides, bridges and forest paths, the hydrangeas show gorgeous shades of dreamy blue, rosy pink and pure white, dressing the ancient garden in elegant, ethereal scenery. Mainly planted with bigleaf hydrangeas plus a few panicle hydrangeas, the flowers feature diverse and lovely shapes.
Famously known as "natural pH test paper", hydrangeas change colors with soil acidity: blue in acidic soil, pink in alkaline soil, and purple in between. Gradient pink-and-blue blooms on a single plant are a magical natural sight.
Ancient pavilions paired with soft hydrangea blossoms create a timeless poetic view. Located at No 218 Huyi Road, the garden opens daily from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, with last entry at 4:30 pm.
