Red bayberries have entered harvest season at Lijiang Ecological Park in Shanghai's Jiading district, where the dark red fruits are now ready for picking.
The park cultivates 15 mu (about one hectare) of Biqi red bayberries, a popular variety introduced from Cixi, Zhejiang province in 2012. The berries are known for their juicy flesh and sweet-tart flavor.
According to park staff member Shen Zhijing, red bayberries harvested in early June are crisp and refreshing, while those picked later in the month become softer, sweeter, and more intensely flavored.
As the berries have a short shelf life, visitors are encouraged to enjoy them fresh after picking. The harvest season lasts only about a fortnight.
Lijiang Ecological Park, located at No 5088 Shuangzhu Road in Loutang town (Jiading Industrial Zone), is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm through June 22.
