Global materials science leader Corning signed an agreement on June 15 to establish a new company in Shanghai's Jiading district, with plans to develop a world-class production base generating annual output valued at $1 billion.
The project will focus on large-scale production of high-precision fiber-optic connector assemblies, primarily serving the rapidly expanding data center market. It will introduce key equipment, enhance manufacturing and testing capabilities, and cultivate a skilled workforce to enhance local production and delivery capacity.
Corning first established operations in Jiading in 2010 with Corning Optical Communications (Shanghai) Co Ltd. Over the past decade, the company has grown alongside the district, which is emerging as a hub for advanced manufacturing and innovation.
At the signing ceremony, Gao Xiang, head of Jiading district, said the district is accelerating the development of its key industries while advancing the application of artificial intelligence in advanced manufacturing. She expressed hope that Corning would further expand investment in areas such as AI and quantum communications and pledged strong support in industrial policies, talent services, and business development initiatives.
Lin Chunmei, Corning's global vice-president and president and general manager of Greater China, said China remains a vital market in the company's global strategy. She noted that Jiading's strong industrial foundation and efficient business environment make it an ideal location for further expansion and deeper cooperation.
