International students and teachers from Shanghai Normal University Tianhua College explored Jiangnan Boudoir Embroidery, a district-level intangible cultural heritage of Jiading district, at the Zhouqiao Old Street during the Shanghai Confucius Culture Festival.
Fan Dongmei, a representative inheritor of the craft and head of Huiniangzi Haishang Embroidery Garden, introduced the visitors to embroidered artworks and products and then demonstrated traditional stitching techniques.
The group browsed bookmarks, accessories, and double-sided embroidery pieces, selecting Jiangnan-style gifts for family and friends back home. In a hands-on workshop, participants embroidered seal-shaped desk ornaments.
"The experience was wonderful. I really enjoyed creating a piece of art of my own, and I am happy I could choose gifts for my family to take back to the United States," said Alisa, a foreign teacher, who also expressed interest in learning more embroidery techniques.
Huiniangzi Haishang Embroidery Garden is offering walk-in embroidery lessons through Oct 23, the closing date of the festival.
Located in a century-old red-brick building at No 17, Lane 295 on Zhouqiao Old Street, the studio opens from 10 am to 4 pm, Wednesday to Sunday, starting Oct 11. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
