( chinadaily.com.cn ) 2014-07-25

Short-term individual rentals can be handled via the company website or a smartphone app and, after booking online, the person can pick the car up at a rental site with a key card and return the car to any rental site. They can pay by credit card or online via Alipay and Wechat.

E-car rental site in Jiading

According to Cao Guangyu, vice-GM of SIAC, rental costs for e-cars is 30 yuan ($4.8) per hour, or the same as for a traditional car, but, over the long run, the cost of electricity is only 10 percent of the gas price, which makes the e-car suitable for office workers with daily commutes of less than 100 km, or business travelers, tourists and college teachers and students.

The company also has a 5-year plan to promote e-cars, providing 300 e-cars in Anting, Jiading, in 2014, with the number expected to reach 800 by 2015 and 5,000 in all of Shanghai by 2017.

Still, some people still have concerns about distance, charging facilities, reliability and cost-effectiveness, but Cao believes that new energy vehicles will enjoy rapid development and social recognition through rental services over the next five years.
