The award has been given because of the theater's beautiful and natural look.

Officials said that the kaleidoscope-shaped theater was built by the Shanghai Poly property and designed by the well-known Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who is famous for his simplistic design style.

The facades are decorated with round and hearted-shaped caves, hiding a slew of passageways to the stage.

Apart from the geometric elements, the architect also brings natural landscapes to the theater, creating a harmonious space combined with nature, art and culture.

With its unique "waterscape auditorium", the theater is considered a cultural landmark in Shanghai.

Its architect Tadao Ando had also said that the theater is the best among his design works in China.

The Luban Award was established by the China Building Joint Association, in 1987 to encourage building companies to improve their construction quality. It was handed over to the China Building Association in 1993. Its winners included two stadiums of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games – the Bird's Nest and the Water Cube.
