The First Yangtze River Delta Sports Festival kicked off in the Shanghai Municipal Sports Park in Shanghai's Jiading district on Oct 23.
The festival is a regional event held by the sports departments of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui provinces and Shanghai municipality in the YRD region. It is also a brand new fitness event.
A total of 47 competitions, including 28 official competition programs and 19 promotion programs, will be held during this year's festival, spanning 10 cities in YRD region such as Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, and Hefei, with over 8,000 participants.
Four programs including basketball, running, roller skating, and cycling are official competitions, while eight programs such as rugby, martial arts, boomerang, skipping rope, and city orienteering are being promoted.
"The first YRD Sports Festival is well underway, and roller skating is getting more and more attention. I hope it will become more and more popular so that more people can participate," said Chen Yingying from Wenzhou University.
Six-year-old roller hockey player Xu Ziqian from Jiading district, who won first place in the U6 team roller hockey game, said that he likes roller hockey the most and will keep practicing it.
"We hope to encourage more people to participate in sports and enjoy fitness by hosting the YRD sports festival," said Xu Kui, deputy director of the district bureau of sport.
